Irene is Professor Emerita, George Washington University, where she taught Russian language and linguistics and served as chair of the Slavic Department from 1968 to 1995. She also taught at Cornell, Bryn Mawr, Middlebury, and University of Hawai’i, and spent two years as supervising linguist of the Russian program at the Foreign Service Institute. Since her retirement from teaching in 1995, she has been serving as senior consultant at the National Foreign Language Resource Center of the University of Hawai’i, as language consultant to The Technology Development Group, and as co-editor of the journal Language Learning & Technology. She lives with her husband Richard Thompson in Round Hill, Virginia.
